The sub-zero overnight low temperatures and brutally cold wind chills during the first week of the New Year caused pipes in some area homes and businesses to freeze and for ice to form on the Ohio River. Many of the shallow creeks and streams in the interior of the county froze solid. Then the cold quickly gave way to warmer tempera- tures and heavy rains Jan. 11- 12, with some parts of Tyler County receiving over three inches during a short period of time. With the ground still frozen, the rain and melting ice caused many of the local creeks and streams to flood as debris and ice floes created dams, followed by a return of cold temperatures and snow. “Flooding was very bad,” said noted local historian Eli Henthorn. “It was up in places even the older folks had never seen before.” The 18-year-old college student noted flood waters had gotten under one of the old houses but not above the floor. “Farther down Elk Fork you can see all of the debris stuck in the farmer’s fences.
