Garrett captures Jerry Potts Memorial, Kyle Thomas grabs his 1st Late Model feature of season

Pat Garrett wins Jerry Potts Memorial

MIDDLEBOURNE -- Another outstanding night of action was put in the books as Tyler County Speedway celebrated Dad, Dogs & Dirt Night. With 115 eager racers hitting the track, competition was fierce throughout the night on a hammer-down surface. Picking up feature wins were Pat Garrett, Kyle Thomas, Brandon Weigle, Shawn Jett, Brian Probst, Jacob McDaniel, Colten Long and Leah Brightwell.

The night's headline race was the Middlebourne Galaxy Food Center Sportmod division with the running of the Jerry Potts Memorial. A stacked field of 30 entrants accepted the challenge with Reno, Ohio, veteran Pat Garrett coming out on top and securing the 1st place trophy. The victory was not be easy for the ‘Marshal’ as Garrett held off the night's fast qualifier and a charging Wesley Reed, Cruz Vandall, Lance Weppler, and Nick Corbitt to pick up the prestigious victory. The win was Garrett’s 2nd of the season at the ‘Bullring’ aboard the M&M Land Company PCD Chassis machine.

Pennsboro’s Kyle Thomas removed the 2023 "monkey off his back" in dominate fashion in the Stutler Motorsports Super Late Model division. The talented shoe rocketed off the pole position after a friendly redraw and vaulted out to the lead and claimed his first Super Late win of the season in convincing fashion. Thomas pilots the Powell & Son Farms/ Dodd’s Sporting Goods/ Hyre Well & Pump #57 and was followed to the pay window by a rapidly improving Trey Watson, Freddie Carpenter, Daniel Hill and last week's winner Ryan Payne.

The race of the night was in the J&R Excavating RUSH Late Model main event as Kyle Thomas looked to pick up another feature win as the veteran controlled the race's early stages. Brandon Weigle vaulted from his fourth-starting position to the rear bumper of Thomas and the duo then waged an all-out war for the top spot for the race's duration. Weigle would try high and low with Thomas turning back one attempt after another until Weigle eventually wrested the top spot away with just a couple laps remaining to secure the win. A great race, with Weigle taking the top spot just ahead of Thomas, Donnie Dotson, AJ Spagnuolo and George Casto. Weigle picked up his fourth win of the season aboard the Titan Energy Solutions/ Weigle Farms/ Landon Hall Construction/ D&S Automotive Rocket XR 1.

Pennsboro’s Shawn Jett scored his 3rd trip to the EQT Victory Lane of the season in the Jenkins Auto Parts UMP Modified division. Jett held off a hard-charging Chad Smith to earn the victory. Following Jett and Smith across the line were Derek Doll subbing for Ryan Jones, Doug Carson and Danny Thomas. Jett wheels the Sam Irvin-owned WV Land Works/ Slicks Car Wash/ Doll Brothers Fabrications/ JAM Oil & Gas/ Jenkins Auto Parts/ Tye Twarog Performance Parts/ Pierce Platinum hot rod.

Brian Probst of New Martinsville continued his dream season by notching win #4 of the season and looked poised to earn back- to-back track championships. Probst survived a first-lap pileup in turns one and two but once the veteran was at the point it was sayonara for the rest of the field. Probst bested son Eddie Probst to the line with last week's winner Tom Sigler, Tim Spencer and Josh Sigler rounding out the top five. Probst drives the Jimmy Dudley-owned Dudley Motorsports/ Jenkins Auto Parts/ Letter RIP Graphics/ Miller Equipment & Machine/ Hardrock Powder Coating/ Zach Yost/ Lightning chassis #33.

In the Dual Threat Sports Cards SCDRA 4 Cylinder main event once again Coolville, Ohio’s Jacob McDaniel crossed the line in first. However, it was not easy for the wheelman of the #22 MWP/ Mister Bee/ Kuya Union Coffee/ BJP Racing machine as 4th-starting McDaniel overtook race leader Joey Price late in the race to secure his fourth win of the season. Following McDaniel across the line were Jason Frazier, Joe Price, Tim Harlan and Jakob Chipps.

Young Colten Long picked up his first-ever feature win in the Hino Motors Manufacturing USA Junior Mini Wedge feature over Eli Smith and Peyton Gibson. In the Senior class once again Leah Brightwell turned back all challengers. Following Brightwell to the EQT Victory Lane were Erickson Smith and Jake Casto.

Be sure to join them next Saturday night, June 24, as Tyler County Speedway welcomes the Monster Truck Mania for a family fun night of high-flying car-crushing action.
