See Page A11 for story and more photos. SISTERSVILLE – A Christmas Day incident ended with a residential traile r destroyed and a Tyler County man life - flighted to the hospital. According to a statement released by the Tyler County Sheriff’s Oiffce, abou t 3:30 p.m. Dec. 25, they were advised Michael Lee Cooper of 6684 r Tyle Highway, Sistersville, had left a mes- sage on a friend’s phone saying he had filled his trailer with gas and propane. Deputies from the Tyler County Sher- iff’s Oiffce responded to sthe addres and made phone contact with Cooper , who made threats against his own life and attempted to get oiffcers to come into the trailer. “He made numerous threats to the oiff - cers’ lives and was kept on the phone for over two hours in an effort to end the situation without incident,e ” th statement said. Cooper refused to leav e the residence and oiffcere s lost phon contact with him for about an hour. At 6:53 p.m. an oiffcer owas able t again make phone contact with Coope r and he said he would come out. “Before exiting the residence and whil e on the phone with a deputy. , Mr Cooper attempted to light a cigarette. This attempt caused an explosion and the trailer was engulfed in fire. Approx - imately a minute later, Mr. Cooper fel l out of a window and landed on e th ground. Oiffcers responded to his aid and carried him to safety,” the state- ment said. Monroe County ranks as Ohio’s third largest oil and natural gas producer and as such is witnessing mil- lions of dollars in additional revenue pouring into its coffers. Yet, the financial picture isn’t as rosy as one would think. The county is pouring millions into education and other proj- ects but is also projecting millions in deficits next year. For this fiscal year, the county is ex- pected to be short about $500,000, largely due to its obligations to the county’s senior home. Next fiscal year the shortfall is expected to soar to more than $3 million, because of an insur- ance rate increase. Those are the bad figures.
